Carl Minkel has studied martial arts for over 50 years, beginning with classical fencing in 1963. He was a member of the 1966 NCAA Middle Atlantic States All Conference Team for saber, received his first degree black belt in Taekwondo in 1977, and first degree black belt in traditional Arnis in 1985. He began training with Grandmaster Remy Presas in Modern Arnis in 1985 and continued until Professor Presas’ untimely death in 2001. Mr. Minkel now studies Pekiti Tirsia Kali under Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje and his Maryland representative Tuhon Bobby Ladra. Mr. Minkel holds the rank of 7th degree black belt in Taekwondo, 4th degree black belt in Modern Arnis, and Mataas Na Guro (Master Instructor) in Pekiti Tirsia Kali.

Mr. Minkel was a member of the senior professional staff of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for over 37 years, working in the areas of advanced signal processing, neural networks and expert systems. He is also a Guild Certified teacher of the Feldenkrais Method helping athletes, musicians, and equestrians to improve performance and assisting people with chronic pain to move more efficiently. He is the founder and chief instructor of Mt. Airy’s Taekwondo-Arnis Academy, a martial arts school that applies the principles of Feldenkrais Method to traditional martial arts and self defense.
